The Department of Biochemistry was established in 1972 as part of a combined department with Physiology and became an independent subject in the MBBS curriculum in 1977.
The Department of Biochemistry provides MBBS students with a strong foundation in the biochemical basis of human life, health, and disease. The department focuses on teaching the structure and functions of biomolecules, metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids, enzymes, vitamins, hormones, molecular biology, genetics, nutrition, and clinical biochemistry. By integrating basic sciences with clinical practice, the Department of Biochemistry helps students develop analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a scientific approach to medical practice, thereby preparing them for their future roles as competent and compassionate physicians.
Departmental activities
Through regular interactive lectures, practical laboratory sessions, demonstrations, case-based learning, small-group discussions (SGD), self-directed learning(SDL) and seminars as per latest CBME curriculum provided by NMC. By integrating basic sciences with clinical practice, the Department of Biochemistry helps students develop analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a scientific approach to medical practice, thereby preparing them for their future roles as competent and compassionate physicians.
Training
The department currently provides training to 150 MBBS undergraduate students and also to other allied health courses including B Sc nursing students . It also offers summer internship opportunities to postgraduate M.Sc ( Biochemistry,Medical Biochemistry and Zoology) and undergraduates such as B.Tech, Biotechnology and B.Sc. courses from nearby colleges including Mahayogi Gorakhnath University of Health Sciences under Faculty of Heath and Sciences.
